SMBkit™
For diagnostic swallow challenges, it is important to vary the thickness of test boluses, however differences in the conductivity between bolus viscosities influences the impedance recordings, confusing their interpretation.
Developed through a collaboration between Flinders University and Trisco Foods Pty Ltd, SBMkit™ is a simple to use system for making up bolus test media for P-HRM-I investigations.
SBMkit™ has been designed to ensure that testing viscosities are standardized and reproducible according to the established viscosity frameworks.
Swallow Gateway Normal Ranges are derived using SMBkit™.
There are now numerous publications reporting datasets based on SBMkit™ bolus challenges. Rheological data has also been provided below.
SBMkit™ comprises SBM Kit Saline Concentrate combined with a thickener (Thick-N INSTANT or Simply Thick).

SBMkit Rheology
Rheological measurements were conducted using a TA Instruments AR2000 rotational rheometer. A cone and plate geometry was used, with a Peltier temperature controlled base plate and a 60mm 2 degree stainless steel cone. 1.98 ml of sample was loaded into the geometry and sheared at 1s-1 for 30 seconds followed by a 5 minute equilibration at 25°C. A step flow scan was conducted from 0.1 to 1000 s-1 for each sample.
SGW Online training course
Swallow Gateway is pleased to offer opportunities for you to enhance your knowledge about Swallow Gateway Analysis of High-Resolution Manometry.
SGW Learning Opportunities Play videoThe SGW Basics Online Training Course (view video) teaches optimal use of Swallow Gateway for analysis and explains how novel pressure-flow metrics are derived and what they mean. "Throughout the course I was inspired by the Swallow Gateway Team’s expertise, enthusiasm, and dedication. From the first module it is clear this is not your “average” online course. Content is presented in an accessible, thoughtful and engaging manner. There are a range of videos, interactive diagrams, readings, and tasks. Personal feedback on analyses was generously offered. Thank you for a most informative and rewarding course."
- Course Participant 2020
SGW Basics Online Training Course comprises five modules; covering pharyngeal, esophageal and esophago-gastric-junction analysis. Example studies, activities, exercises, helpful videos, resources and one-on-one training support are provided to optimise your learning. Course modules are completed in your own time with enrolment to suit your schedule. Once registered, the SGW Team will be in contact to arrange your participation and provide further information.
